Student Digital Reading Log Using Google Sheets
Why Google Sheets
Educators often require students to edit a reading log to show and track their reading over the year. However, collecting hard-copies of student reading logs can be a tedious task.
I recommend using Google Sheets for a number of reasons.
- Sharability. First, Google Sheets is easily sharable via Google Classroom. Students may edit their log throughout the year and then “turn it in” once completed. Students and teachers may easily share the reading log with parents, administrators or educators simply by using the Share feature located within Sheets or through co-teachers in Classroom. And, students can work on their reading log at home and at school.
- Feedback. It is so easy to provide students with feedback using the Commenting Tool.
- Collaboration. If students were researching together then they could share references, ideas and summaries with their partners.
- It will not get LOST. I can’t count how many times we have lost my son’s reading log at home.

The following digital book log allows students to set a goal for how many books they wish to read. As the student updates their reading log on a weekly basis the percentage towards that goal is automatically updated.

Ways to distribute the digital book log
- Google Classroom-Make a Copy for every student
- QR Code Generator– Post a QR Code
- Gmail- Share the file with students and email it to them
- Teacher Website- Post a link to the URL on the teacher’s website. Remember to change the URL ending from “edit” to “copy” which will force students to make their own copies
Summary
There are many ways to have students track their reading. But, Google Sheets allows teachers and students to easily monitor progress using the amazing features of Google.

So if the school isn’t using Google Classroom, is there a way for the teacher to see the student’s information? Or must the child’s parent attach a copy in email?

I love this!! I’m looking for some quick and easy ways to get my students to start using Google Classroom without going completely paperless…. I think there needs to be a balance. I’m just wondering if you’ve got a way to collate the number of hours read, or pages read, centrally on a master sheet? Or do you just go in to each child’s log and look at it individually?
